Maxi Dresses

I recently found a green Lux maxi dress at Goodwill and have been in love (and on the hunt) for maxi dresses ever since. It's great for when you just don't want to shave your legs but want to wear a dress anyway. Maxi dresses are great for the weekend or the beach with flip flops, thong sandals, or gladiator sandals, and if your workplace is casual enough, you can also wear them to the office (though maybe with a cardigan on if it has spaghetti straps, for instance).

Keep certain things in mind before purchasing a maxi dress:

Get the right cut: This is kind of "duh," right, but what exactly is the right cut for each person? If you are amply endowed in the chest you're not going to want to be spilling out all over the place. You might want to want to go with something that has thicker straps (so you can wear a supportive bra and not worry about the straps showing), a halter, or a dress with the cinchy elastic top where that will give you a little extra support in addition to the strapless you should probably wear underneath it.
Get the right length: Maxi dresses, ideally, should hit you just below the ankle so that the dress covers up your legs but isn't so long that you end up tripping over the hem or dragging it in the mud. They should also work if they are slightly shorter, but only if they hit you at a thinner part of your leg, such as right below the thickest part of your calf. These dresses are probably best suited for the gladiator sandal look.
Get the right fit: Maxi dresses should skim your body, not squeeze it like a tube dress or swallow you up in swaths of fabric (maybe Mary Kate Olson can do it, but somehow people also let them get away with wearing headbands and muumuus. Go figure.) You want the freedom of the flowly dress without being curtained in extra fabric that's going to make you look bigger than you are, restrict your movement, and make you warmer with more cloth than necessary.

I've seen a version of this dress in pink and gold in the stores, but was really taken by the silver and white combo when I saw this online. You could say it goes along the lines of the "ethnic" prints that are in vogue right now without being too obvious and trendy in a this-dress-will-age-badly kind of way. (Also, can I just say, I hate how so much is lumped into the term "ethic" it's kind of gross to me in a sociological kind of way, but I digress. I mean, what is non-ethic?)

In high school after months and months of complaining about how dowdy I felt, how bad my skin looked, my friend Molly gave me a gift of eyeshadow and foundation and introduced me to the world of Clinique. Insert dramatic music. I was never the same again.

The nautical trend in fashion seems to have some staying power, and I for one am glad for it. Blue, white, and red stripes. Bows. Gold buttons. Wide legs and high waists. It's a classic look that works well especially for the warm summer months.

They key to the look is to avoid looking too twee and precious (and too much like a little girl) and finding a balance between all your pieces. Find a cute sailor dress? Maybe pair it with some fierce espadrilles or some mod sunglasses. Sailor pants? Go with a top thats crisp and clean.

Now, you might want to go for the whole kaboodle, but you might be trending more towards costume than fashion, but if you can rock it, why not?

Street Style: NYC

I spent part of my Memorial Day weekend in New York City with my boyfriend and friends of ours who live in Manhattan. On Friday we went over to Chelsea to check out some of the art galleries. On W. 22nd Street (just down the block from the Balenciaga store) I saw a woman standing out the gallery, as cool as can be, dressed like this:

While not my personal style, I had to admire hers (even if she looked posed as though hoping against hope that the Sartorialist would wander on by and snap her photograph).

The simplicity and the informality of the white ribbed tank top balanced out the ostentatiousness of the leopard print skirt, and she kept the color palette simple with white strappy sandals and a brown clutch as to not make her outfit too busy. Hair up, cigarette in hand, she looked the epitome of indifferent cool.

In between the Target Go International collection from Rogan (now in stores) and the 15th designer collection from Richard Chai, Target is launching its second round of its unnamed in-house designer private collection.

The first range seemed to be shooting for more of a "mod" look with its color blocking and neon colors. Some might have found those less than accessible, as that collection offered interesting silhouettes, but ones that might not have fit most body types. This new collection, however, looks a lot more promising and a lot more accessible, especially for summer. Just from the previews (and from the history of fabrics used in these GO collections...) Converse One Star at Target

I love me some Target. This, despite working there for two years when I was 16-18 (thanks for the Team Member Scholarship btw, HOLLA). If anything, I've only grown to like it more as it's become more fashionable. Not that this blog has been around that long yet, but in its time I've given a lot of attention to the Go International lines, but the Converse One Star line has kind of gone under my radar...until today.

During my lunchbreak I wandered in and saw the cute red baseball tank pictured, and lo' it was on clearance for $10.98. I snagged it and look around some more. These are just some of the cute items available for women. A number of items are on clearance right now and totally appropriate for spring and summer wear, so if you're looking for some relaxed weekend casual, you might want to check it out (also, really cute swimwear!)

Bag, Borrow, or Steal

Not everyone can own an “It” bag like the Fendi Bageuette or the Chloe Paddington. That’s why they’re such desirable items: exclusivity (and insane price tags). However, there is an abundance of fakes, knock-offs, and inspired-by bags to be found everywhere. (Raise your hand if you’ve never had the suspicion that someone carrying around a monogram Louis Vuitton bag or a Coach bag screaming out its “C’s” is not carrying the real deal.)

While his featured Balenciaga Arena City Bag> retails for around, oh, $1,595, this very, very similar Primo Limited Loft Tote at Baghaus.com is only $58.00. If you just like the look of it, well, maybe this is perfect! But if you want the real thing, what are you to do? Are you going to plop down your savings or go into debt to own a handbag? Play the eBay game and hope, hope, hope you can get one, and not go bankrupt in the process? Or, would you consider an option like Bag, Borrow, or Steal, a website where you can rent out an it-handbag for a certain time period (and sometimes buy at used one at a discounted rate)?

Rates aren’t cheap. If you are a member, renting this Balenciaga bag will cost you $60.00/week, and if you’re a non-member, it will cost you $89.00 a week.

Is this worth it? Perhaps in very special cases, like a wedding or class reunion? Now, the site also rents out jewelry and other accessories, which, for something like a wedding, might not be such a bad idea. If you only need it for one day, it might not be such a bad idea to rent something like this beautiful diamond and pearl necklace by Vera Wang for $50.00/week ($70.00 as a non-member).

Care for Your Handbags, Part 1

Being thrifty and budget-friendly with your clothes, shoes, and accessories is not just about finding good deals on the rack. It’s also about taking care of what you already own and making those pieces—especially those splurges or high-quality items—last.

From time to time I’ll be writing a series of these posts on how to care for different items—from jeans to shoes to handbags.

The first topic I’m going to cover is how to care for your leather handbags—and for now, just how to care for your smooth leather handbags.

I didn’t always care for my handbags, but this was back when I only had about two that I really used, and one was PVC. It never occurred to me that the leather would damage as it did until I picked my Jana Feiffer hanbag one day and found the leather cracked all along the handle. To add insult to injury, the bottom of the bag had also cracked open to where I could see the inner lining peeking out.

If only I had taken a few easy steps to care for it…

Keep it from Cracking
For smooth leather grab a smooth polishing (shoe polishing rags work great) and clean and condition your leather handbag with leather conditioning cream like one from Kiwi. You can also try saddle soap, but you might not get as good of a clean as there are some reports that say that because of its high oil-content, it does not clean the pores of the leather as well. In some cases, users of saddle soap have indicated the use caused permanent damage because of the alkali content.

After cleaning you can apply a leather protector/waterproofing agent to the leather to protect if from the elements (and from yourself!)

Shine it Up
If the leather on your bag is beginning to look dull, you can apply polish to it to brighten it up. I’d recommend using a neutral polish, like Meltonian Boot & Shoe Cream Polish for most bags as brown, black, or white polishes that you might find for shoes will unlikely match your bag and stain/discolor the leather. There are also clear polishes available. Remember to apply the polish with a soft cloth and then buff it when you’re done to bring back the shine.

And always, always remember to test any of these products on a hidden spot on the leather (like on the bottom) before using it on the entire item in case of discoloration or damage.

If you think, “it’s going to cost me a ton to buy all these cleaning products,” think of it as another investment, especially if you have a variety of handbags, or if you splurged on a beautiful designer bag and want it to be something that lasts you not just years or decades (also, many of these products can also be used to clean your shoes—double duty!) If that doesn’t convince you, maybe give a holler to some friends or coworkers, have everyone get one item and create a “care kit” that can be passed around. Remember, caring for your leather isn’t an around-the-year thing—just do it once in a while for maintenance.

One last thing…cleaning is one thing…remember to also care for the leather. Don’t clean it with water. If it is exposed to water, remember to dab at it to dry—don’t wipe, and do it as soon as you have a chance. Every little bit helps.

Bermuda, Bahama, c'mon pretty mama. . .

Around the time I went to college I realized that I did not like shorts. They seemed to be getting shorter each year and lower in rise. I also had the added problem of the legs of the shorts riding up in the middle, which resulted in unpleasantness that you can call "rubbage." I soon gave up on them, and even when I moved to Arizona for graduate school I decided, 100 degrees plus be damned! I am going to continue on wearing pants and jeans (I also cultivated a newfound love of the skirt at that time). However, lo'! What is this hitting the fashion scene? Why, Bermuda shorts (aka walking shorts)? Shorts long enough to prevent rubbage, but short enough for the vertically challenged who often find that capri pants fit around the ankle or over the thickest part of one's calf muscle? Cleaner lines than say, your clam digger? Sign me up!

I love Bermuda shorts for warm weather, especially with flip flops or espadrilles. They come in all colors and patterns and at pretty decent prices. The photo above are examples of shorts ($12.99-$39.90) found at Target, Old Navy, Guess, and at Kohl's. New York and Company also has what seems like a bumper crop of Bermuda shorts for sale, and right with certain styles, buy one and get one at 50% off.

If you're looking for something perhaps in higher quality (or just designer--I can't vouch for quality off the bat), it looks like YOOX.com has a number of styles on sale (in limited sizes for some), but you can get your hands on shorts by the likes of See by Chloe, R.E.D. by Valentino, and Citizens of Humanity (all featured here). The sale prices all fall under $50.00.

The Thong Song

The good ol' rubber flip flop is a standard for summer. It's comfortable, it's casual, and it's cool. However, sometimes it might just be a little too casual. In which case, a thong sandal a sprinkling of embellishment might just be the thing to do the trick. While still possessing the comfort of a nice, flat flip-flop, it has a little more style and can easily be paired with jeans or a skirt. Here are some affordable examples under $80.

Are you addicted to bargain hunting?

I've been finding it harder and harder for myself to pass up a good deal these days, especially now that I'm no longer a starving student, and what with the downturn in the economy. I've become hyperaware of spending, but what that's resulted in is the search for deals, which has resulted in me wanting to buy anything that seems like a deal. Something on clearance for 50% off? Right it goes into my shopping cart! Where I used to go ahead and buy these items without a second thought, I've been making more of a conscientious effort NOT to just buy because it's cheap. Some of the items in the Jovovich Hawk for Target went on clearance lately and more than once I dropped them in my cart only to convince myself before I left the store to put it back on the rack. I'm also addicted to thrift store shopping lately, but you spend $16-20 each trip and perhaps make more than one trip a week, it starts to really add up, and what do you get? (For me, an overstuffed closet and an espresso machine/coffeemaker duo that's sitting on top of the kitchen cabinets.)

And so I ask myself, (a) am I addicted to shopping? and (b) am I in particular, addicted to thrift shopping?

Here are six telltale signs of bargain junkies:

They hit sales and clearance racks when they feel angry or down.
They spend more than they can afford.
They see sales as opportunities they can't pass up.
They feel guilty about their shopping and hide their purchases.
They spend so much time tracking down deals that their time with family and friends is compromised.
They routinely forget what they bought and find things in their closets unused.

However, I am comforted that if I am, I am not (yet) at the level of this one schoolteacher from New Mexico:

Citizens of Humanity Jeans at Hot Couture

I think this is for real, but you can check it out yourself. Apparently at Hot Couture you can pick up one of three pairs of Citizens of Humanity jeans (retail approx. $150) for only $15.00 (plus S/H). The site in general carries a number of different items from different stores and designers, and all for under $15.00.

The site says it carries "juniors" clothing, but I think there are a number of items that could go both ways.

Sizes for the jeans are getting limited, so if you want them, it might be time to pick them up. I('m still on shopping hiatus so long as I can restrain myself, though I did hit the button for my size and then scurried away from the website before I started spending.)

Celebrity "Designers"

A whole slew of celebrities are working with different designers and retail chains to create their own fashion lines. On the more affordable front, these include the likes of Ashlee Simpson creating a line for Wet Seal, Avril Lavigne doing a collection for Kohl’s, and Rachel Bilson working with DKNY Jeans to create her own line.

Avril's line is going to be called Abbey Dawn and will be a juniors' line featuring clothes both feminine and rock 'n' roll. The stock will switch over every 60 days and at least the first run will feature designs inspired by Avril's own wardrobe (kind of like Kate Moss's "desisns" for her Topshop collection). Prices for the different pieces will range from $24-$48 and will make their first appearance this July. Watch for Ashlee's line to come some time in April, in conjunction with the release of her new album, Bittersweet World, and Rachel's line, which is called Edie Rose (named after grandmother and a close family friend), will fall some time in September of this year.

Try not to imagine Paris Hilton saying this, but these Dream Patent Pumps from Forever21 are hot like a potato, like Kilauean lava, like a space shuttle reentry. Also, they are only $22.80. I love the pointy-toe, and most of all I love the raised vamp. It gives a basic black pump more of an oomph, but enough oomph without too much wackiness if that scares you off. Now if only they were actually leather and not synthetic, but

High-Waisted Skirts

I really liked the look of this high-waisted skirt I saw Sarah Chalke's character was wearing when she guested on How I Met Your Mother on last week's show, and thus went off hunting for affordable options of the same. I'd say that these choices are probably more work-appropriate than clubbing- or weekend-appropriate, but I guess it all depends on what you might pair with it.

Target Designer Update

Target is on a roll with lining up designers for its GO International and accessories collections. A quick round up:

Rogan Gregory will be doing a line for Target...but it will only be swimwear. Expect that this summer.

If you're looking for a more expansive GO collection, you'll have to wait for Richard Chai (who has designed for Marc Jacobs and is known for his minimalist style) whose Target line will premiere in August 2008.

And what ho? Looks Target, after working with Rafe, Devi Kroell, Loffler Randall, and (next up) Gryson, has now tapped Monica Botkier to design some handbags. (The bags pictured are Botkier, but NOT Botkier for Target.)

How to wear brights if you're like Donnie Osmond and feel a little bit rock 'n' roll...

I keep reading in different fashion magazines and blogs about how "brights" are really big this season. After a fall and winter of grays and blues and neutrals, spring seems the appropriate time to bust out some flash and color.

Brights can be kind of scary, though, especially if you don't like drawing attention to yourself, because when you show up in say, a bright orange sweater, someone might mistaken you for a Wisconsin hunter during deer season. Maybe not the look you're going for.

It's not all neon, though. We're not flashing back to the early 90s (yet) and unless you want to go there (I'd recommend you don't, and oh god, the memories of my mom dressing me up in neon pink bicycle shorts with my matching white, neon pink, neon green, and neon yellow top for the 1st day of first grade....) Brights don't have to be fluorescent, but they have to POP!

There are different ways to wear brights, and while a rule of thumb is not to wear brights with too much black lest you look cartoonish or like a bumblebee, it all depends on your style.

Case in point: If your style tends to be a little more rocker, you might want to do your brights like this.

Because brights are so bright you'll want to think of wearing them in terms of proportion, contrast, and effect. If you're style is more like this, you're probably not looking to blend in with the masses. You don't want to overdo it, though. Brights in shoes and accessories are a good way to incorporate the brights with subtlety, such as in the case of the blue boots. The brightish yellow t-shirt is toned down because it's worn under a leather jacket and scarf.

At least I think so, but your mileage may vary.

I was browsing The Budget Fashionista when my eyes popped out at seeing bag #1. Why, it looked much like my dream bag, the Cole Haan Sabra (bag #2) that I've been openly lusting after since Christmas, but told myself, no, you shouldn't spend or ask anyone to spend $300 on a bag that is mostly WHITE CANVAS. But oh, it's so pretty! I want to pet its red patent leather trim!

Bag #1 hails from QVC land (it's item #F02183) but alas, while they have a red color available, it's a solid red so not quite a look for less twin with my dream bag. I'll have to pass on this one, but if you're looking for a stylish travel bag, it might not be a bad deal to go for bag #1. You'll have to brave the wilds of QVC, though. The only things I ever got from there were a crushed opal pendant and a Star Trek: Next Generation pin. And my mom bought them for me. And I was 10 years old. But I can't imagine it would be that hard! Just make sure you don't accidentally order a Star Trek Voyager pin, unless that's what you want.

BCBG Max Azria has a number or great collections, from its upscale line, The Max Azria Collection, to more mid-scale lines such as BCBG Girls and To the Max. Still, for me at least unless those items are on sale, scrounged up at a thrift or consignment shop, or gifted, it's a bit out of my budget range when at retail.

Now, though, Max Azria has come out with a new line of even more affordable line. From the preview pictures it seems as though this line is a bit more casual and young, too, but check out their website for some fresher, more tailored items (though they seem to be a bit more expensive, too). Hmm.

The Sartorialist is one of my favorite websites out there right now. Not only are the photographs beautiful, the photographs are of people sporting some great style. Granted, a good deal of the subjects are those in the fashion business, but there are also just pictures of people on the street. It's a great place to find inspiration for your own style, going somewhere beyond fashion magazines and celebrities.

The Celebrity Look for Less

Back in November 2007 Jessica Alba (with Alicia Keyes on her left) wore this Dolce and Gabbana Steve McQueen men's t-shirt with a full gray skirt to MTV's TRL. I'm not sure about the skirt, but the t-shirt retails for $275! I know!

It's a cute outfit, though, half dressy, have casual, kind of cool (IMHO) and if you're looking to replicate it, there are more affordable ways. It's a fun outfit you can wear on a weekend or if going out to somewhere chill. The concept is good, too, because you can pair it with any graphic t-shirt and get a similar effect, and for the spring and summer, maybe pair it with some flip flops and head out for whatever.

The Look for Less (and even less)

These Miu Miu multicolored patent brougues are decidedly high-end, and while they are on sale for $437.50 (down from $625.00) at Net-a-porter, for many, that's still pretty gosh darn steep.

Have no fear, though. There are even cheaper versions of this shoe available, such as the Pauletta round toe pump from Bakers for $29.99 (down from $69.95).

If that's still too steep, well, now the trickle down effect is in full-effect and this Miu Miu inspired pump has found its way to Forever21 in the form of the Neopolitan ice-cream color inspire "Mandy Pump" for $25.80.

For my money, though, I think I'd go for the Baker's version of the shoe, if only because it's (a) still reasonably affordable and (b) made of leather versus man made materials. For about $5.00 more, I think it's probably worth it.

Jovovich-Hawk for Target

The fuller preview for the Jovovich-Hawk line for Target’s GO International line is out, and after the earlier preview which I kind of liked, I now am in full like and possibly, love mode. The clothes from this collection look much more accessible than the last collection from Erin Fetherston, and they look comfortable, too! I like the flowy, bohemian inspired designs that don’t veer too much into a hippy-dippiness, and I like that they look like clothes you can wear everyday, if it’s out to a party or running errands. It's accessible without being boring. The line also includes a couple of swimwear pieces (and swimwear cover-ups). To see the full line up, visit Target’s pressroom website

Of course, it will come down to the quality of the pieces when you see them in person, but because a lot of these items seem to be cotton and meant to be cool and casual, I have higher hopes than I’ve had in the past. A few of the items that look really cute are linen, however, so those will especially be a test, but for now, what is your opinion on this line now that you can see the fuller preview?

Filene's Winter Clearance

Filene's Basement is having their annual winter clearance. Items are marked down 50-75% already reduced prices. At the Filene's in my area, they also had clearance racks where items were generally marked down to $1, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100, so long as they were appropriately tagged. I got a pair of white Mac and Jack shorts for $5, and eyeballed a green khaki Prada skirt for $50 (on the 50-75% off racks I also some lovely See by Chloe items, and some other designer labels).

Steve Madden Clearance

Stevemadden.com has a bunch of shoes on clearance right now, including these blue suede caravan peep toes. The percentages vary, but some are more than 50% off. Styles vary from winter-appropriate boots to summer-appropriate pumps and sandals. One of the problems, though, is that because it is final clearance, you can't return or exchange. However, there is a way around that in some cases.

Zappos.com has a 110% price guarantee where they will refund 110% of the difference between their price and the low price you find at another website or store, so long as they can verify that the price is correct. At Zappos.com, shipping and handling is free both ways, and because it is not final clearance at their website, if the shoe doesn't fit, you are able to return or exchange it, easy peasy. I got these Nexxus equestrian boots through Zappos.com that way, just in case they don't fit right. You just have to make surae that the vendor has the same color and size available in order to make this work. However, after doing a quick spot check, only some of these shoes are showing up, but worth a shot at least if you're worried about fit.

Now, back to Steve Madden...the website says "an additional 30% off already clearanced prices," but the is tricksy of them, because according to a sales rep, that 30% is already part of the reduced prices listed on the website unless I'm missing something, because when I got the boots through Zappos, their customer service rep called Steve Madden they were given this information, although when I talked to a customer service rep at Steve Madden through their chat, they told me otherwise. Still, some good deals abound, so take advantage if you will, or work that willpower, and send some my way if you got a little to spare.

Erin Fetherston at Target

The Erin Fetherston Target GO International line hit Target yesterday. Did you go out and get anything?

I've looked at the pictures, but with budget shopping you often have to really check out the quality of the material and not rely on what you see online which hides flaws, fabric quality, and sizing. It seems the opinion on the Fetherston collection is split--you either love it, or hate it for its ubergirliness/dollhousey feel. For the most part, I love it, but moreso for the pieces that are not like this shiny red charmuse jumper that make you look like a shiny little girl.

If you haven't seen them yet, or didn't find them in your stores, here are some of your best bets, in my opinion:

This Jacquard Print Jacket for $44.99 is adorable and does not look like it only costs $44.99. The fabric of a lot of the outerwear in this collection is great for its price. The crop style is very fashion-forward right now, the bow is removable if it's too cutesy for you, and the black makes it pretty classic for wear well into the future.

This long white bubble coat has been getting a lot of attention, and in person it's definitely a good piece. I imagined the fabric differently in the picture--I thought it was going to be a very smooth plain creme--but the fabric is actually a bit textured. The collar is very cute, very unique, and if you manage to get yourself one of these it will be a great statement piece to wear throughout the winter. It's going for $88.99, which isn't too bad for a winter coat. If you like it though, you might want to get it soon because I think this is one piece that won't be lasting long on the shelves.

This piece, the Corduroy Red Jumper, is my favorite. For only $29.99 it's quite a steal. The fabric is a good quality and the red is a lovely color in person. It's comfortable to wear and fits pretty true to size, or is even a little roomy depending on how much wiggle space you need. There's a nice bib-detailing that gives it a little more oomph, while still being subtle because of the color. The buttons are covered in the same red corduroy material, and thus helps to avoid the cheap quality of the buttons that I've found on other items in the GO International lines.

Hit or Miss
Some of these pieces are hit-or-miss, depending on what you're looking for and what you look like:

This Peter Pan Collar White Blouse was one of my must-gets when I saw the preview for the collection. However, in person the fabric seemed kind of thin and threadbare. Definitely a see-through shirt if you're not careful. I went back and forth on it. I really liked the design with the ribbing and collar, and the buttons, covered in a little bit of black velvet were at least not ugly plastic nubbins. In the end I got it because I figured, if I wore it with the right bra that matched my skintone, I'd be fine, and that I'd probably wear this shirt under something else--like a jumper or vest--and so the sheerness would not be so apparent, and I'd still get the use of the detail that I liked. Hit or miss for $24.99.

I'll have to disagree with some of the reviews on the website on this Lilac Tiered Chiffon Dress, because I didn't think the fabric seemed to look or feel that cheap (I thought the gold dress was worse--it looked crunchy). But for that potential reason, and for the fact that a dress like that is going to be really hit-or-miss depending on your body type (I get a feeling this dress will only look good on you if you are tall and thin, as the tiers on someone who has curves is going to make it poof out everywhere). Buyer beware and all that for $44.99.

Miss
These pieces disappointed me for various reasons:

I thought this shirt looked really cute in the previews. I liked the velvet bow and figured it would be a good shirt to wear with jeans if you wanted to look a little more dressy than a plain t-shirt. However, I was surprised that in person the material of the shirt was very sweatshirt-like. Not at all what I expected. This, combined with what already is a cutesy design, really makes it look like it's a little girl's t-shirt, so no no no.

I thought this Gauze top with indigo bow look cute on the rack, albeit it little sheer. I thought I'd give it a try because I did like that it was kind of basic but had a different flair with the bow and the balloon sleeves. However on, it was way too sheer, and the cuteness of bow could not compensate for that. It also wore very sack-like. For $24.99, not recommended.

the sweater dress

I love sweater dresses. I like having the option of wearing a dress in winter or fall without getting too cold. Throw on some opaque tights underneath and pair with your choice of footwear (pumps, booties, knee-high boots) and you got a full outfit. Sweater dresses are versatile, too. Many of the styles out these days are good for work AND for going out. You can snazzy it up or down in a variety of ways, too, which include pairing it with a belt, throwing on a cardigan or vest on top, layering a short-sleeved or sleeveless sweater dress with a button-down shirt or t-shirt, wearing it over pants and making it a glorified long tunic, pairing it with accessories such as a brooch or a scarf, and I could go on and on . . .

Be careful about the knit of the sweater dress before you purchase. If it’s too thin it might cling and reveal parts you aren’t keen on sharing, and if it’s too chunky of a knit, it might just overwhelm you.

Clearance Alert

Ann Taylor is having a massive 70% off clearance sale. Final sale reduced items are low as $9.99. I hit up one of the stores yesterday and got three tops for under $40.00. You might have better luck finding real steals if you go into a store, but if you don’t have that option, the online prices aren’t bad either. If you need to build up your work wardrobe, this might be a good time to hit the sales. While some of these items might ring a little more summery than you’d like, there are definitely ways in which you can transform them into fall-appropriate.

For instance, this top could be worn just as easily by itself, especially in a hot office, or else, you could throw a cardigan over it, but it could also work by layering it over a colorful short-sleeved blouse or try it with a long-sleeved blouse or with a thin long-sleeve t-shirt, maybe one with balloon sleeves.

Winter Coats

The seasons are changing, give or take the effects of global warming, but as the weather changes it’s time to look for a new winter coat. A winter coat is something I’m willing to splurge on since it’s something you’re likely to wear everyday during the winter months. Still, a splurge for me is a “big, all purpose” item under $200, especially since I have a penchant for winter coats and have at least 4 in rotation.

Here are some I found for under $200 US (and approximately, under £150):

While you can't beat a black trench coat, a coat is one place where you can really play with color and pattern and go wild--because once you get into work or school or where ever, you can take it off, but you can make a statement doing it. Also, a bright and colorful coat is a great way to get seen when dodging traffic!

Cardigans for Fall

In the transition from summer to fall (which might take longer, as it did last year, on account of global warming), a good way to budget your clothes is to “update” summer clothing to make it fall appropriate, and I’m talking about layering here.

Cardigans are a good way to go. Wear one with a short sleeved blouse, with t-shirts, or with dresses, and voile, you’re ready for autumn (and for offices that continue to be too cold). Cardigans, if you use the term loosely, come in a variety of styles and shapes. There’s your traditional button-up cardigan, but you also have your swing cardigans, the sweater coat, and the bolero or crop-cut cardigan type sweaters.

Here are some affordable options:

Despite working there as a cashier and Food Avenue employee from the age of 16 to18, Target wasn’t able to beat the love out of me for their stores and their goods. In fact, it seems like they’re getting better with each passing year, and more fabulous as well.

Their GO+International line has been tapping many up-and-coming designers for fresh and fashionable. Right now the Libertine line is still in stores, and in fact, as I was just at one an hour ago, I noticed that Libertine is now on clearance, making ready for the new GO+International line by Alice Temperly (however, Libertine doesn’t seem to have been marked as clearance yet on the website).

They’ve now also tapped Jovovich-Hawk (a dress for their 2006 designer line pictured above) for a clothing line, Loeffler Randall for accessories, (which, while I like the design, I hope that they look better in person and that the weird shine that’s making it look cheap is just really horrible lighting), Hollywould is also tapped for accessories and shoes, and right now you can get designer jewelry by Dominique Cohen (necklace pictured).

Ballet Flats

Ballet flats are big this fall (so I hear and read all over the place). And why not? They're great for work or play, and if you want cute shoes but don't really love heels because of the angle and the squish and the wobblies or whatever, flats are a great option.

Two-toned shoes are also big, and while you're going to have to dish out a pretty penny if you want these Chanel two-toned flats, you can get pretty much the same design with the famous logo at GAP for $39.50. Like Tory Burch? There are a couple cheaper brands that are very similar and just as cute (if not cuter), such as these Steve Madden flats on sale at Macy's for $25.87 or these crest ballet flats at Payless for $19.99. Want cute for even cheaper? Old Navy has a mess of cute ballet flats for $19.50.

An adorable minidress by Gianni Bini that is very similar to this gorgeous Michael Kors sheath dress, and about 93% more inexpensive at $138.00 versus $1,965. Only available in heather and made of flannel stretch fabric instead of lux wool and cashmere in a beautiful camel color, it's still captures the look of the original, and is in gray, which is very in this season. Wear it as it is or pair it with a turtleneck, some tights (or knee socks), and mary janes, you'll look awfully cute in this dress.

When I got into work today I noticed that one of my coworkers had some adorable ankle boots on. I haven't been too keen on the whole ankle boot trend. In fact, I thought that a lot of what I saw looked pretty ridiculous by themselves or paired with any sort of outfit that are not pants that will cover up the fact that they are ankle boots. However, these ankle boots that my coworker was wearing? Totally cute. Also, totally inexpensive because these are from Payless and come in three colors (gray, black, and brown). The collar/lip make it a little dressier and less annoyingly trendy, and really, if the trend fades soon then you're out $30.00 and not $300.00. Cute with a shift dress and tights, or a blouse and skirt combo with some opaque tights.

In random online sales news, I did not know that Mango sold in the U.S., but they do, and they do online, and right now they're having a 70% off clearance sale on some of their items, not least of which this chic little white jacket marked down to $29.99 and this white pencil skirt with buttons that I might just buy because I can convince myself these are staples to my work wardrobe and that they're so lovely and discounted right now.

Illuminating Microderm Cleansing Pads

Okay, so I saw these at Nordstrom’s Rack a while back and was intrigued, but was all, wtf do I need with microdermabrasion? But it called to me, and it was only about $6.70 for a box, and so I trekked back to the store and bought a box. After a few uses over the last two weeks, I can say that I love these Neutrogena Illuminating Microderm Cleansing Pads! They’re double sided and full of soapy goodness. The microdermabrasion side has tiny beads that massage your face and help smooth out bumps and exfoliate dead skin, all the while not being too rough on your face. It’s soapy, too, and so you can get a good cleaning out of it at the same time.

You then rinse your face and flip the pad over to the “conditioning side” which helps moisturize and further smooth out your face. Obviously, this is nothing like the quality of a genuine microderm (or so I’ve heard since I’ve never had one) but it works well for me! My skin felt like pure awesomeness after usage, and even Jim marveled at the baby-softness that resulted.

These are great for travel because they come as dry pads which you wet when you use them, and so you can just throw them in a plastic baggy and go.

Available at some drug stores and some Nordstrom Racks from what I gather, or you can find them online at Drugstore.com for $7.99 (24 pads per pack).

I'm totally stealing this from a post I saw on Fabsugar.com.

Since I moved to the East Coast it seems like every store just trades in plastic bags. Right now I have a plastic bag of plastic bags in my bedroom waiting for recycling. Yes, you can reuse them for garbage bags and whatnot, but unless you're super dirty, you're not going to end up using as many as I currently have in my possession. Also, I've been trying to be better environmentally lately, and part of that is an attempt at not collecting a family of plastic bags. I have a $2 tote from Whole Foods that works nicely, but those bags are not nearly as cute (nor as compact I guess) as the envirosax or the the Japanese Baggu. The Baggu holds about 25lbs. of groceries in each bag, and though I'm not sure about the Envirosax offhand, it's probably about the same.

Also, cute! And for only $7.50 and $8 respectively. I don't have the yet, but I want them.

We Love Not-So-Short Shorts

Thank goodness. The knee-length shorts are back in and they come with cuffs! I love them because they don't ride up and allow your thighs to rub together like a person trying to start a fire with chicken drumsticks. These shorts by Kenzie Girl are super cute. White is great for summer, and with long shorts you can wear them with say, a white blouse and a babydoll dress that will cover your ass if you're concerned about the see-through nature of said-white shorts. These shorts would also be cute with a long tunic, maybe paired with a skinny belt around the waist, and some wedge peep-toe shoes, like these at Target ($16.00 on clearance now).

I love pretty clothes. However, I can't afford all the high-end fashions or even one piece unless I can find it drastically reduced at a consignment shop. So I'm all good with imitations or brands with a similar look without the spirit-crushing pricetag. Yes, you can look cute while rocking those boots you bought on clearance at Target, and unless you hang out with douchedbags who will call you on your brand or about how this or that is "so last season," I think you can get away with it and live contented that your grandchildren won't be burying you in a cardboard box because they have to absorb your debt from too many splurges on Jimmy Choo or Prada.

Thus was born, Cute But Affordable.
